2026 — Editorial / Art Direction
Chroma
Art direction and editorial design for an independent music annual — a portrait-led issue about the colour of night-time sound.
Overview
Chroma is an independent annual that documents electronic music culture through long-form writing and commissioned photography. For its fifth issue — on night-time sound and the rooms it fills — the editors asked the studio to direct the whole visual register: cover, portrait series and a layout system flexible enough for essays, interviews and photo stories.
The concept was simple: shoot every sitter in the light they perform in. Red rooms, blue booths, sodium stairwells — no studio backdrops, no retouching past recognition.
Approach
The studio cast and directed three nights of portrait sessions across Brussels and Antwerp, then built the issue around them — full-bleed openers, generous margins, and a single condensed grotesque running against the photography. Captions were set like set-lists; running heads carry the issue's recording dates.
Print production was treated as part of the art direction: uncoated stock, a deep-red fifth colour on section openers, and singer-sewn binding so spreads sit flat.
